Sugarloaf Lions Club has been supporting Open Door in Bray for 13 years. It is a strong and important relationship for the club and one which all of the members really value.

We have held an annual table quiz for open door since 2008, support their annual golf outing and provide occasional ad hoc support. This year we were happy to provide some extra

support during the COVID-19 crisis. We intend to continue our support of this vital local service. We encourage you to read more about this vital service here and visit their website and facebook page.

Suzanne Cox is the Development Officer for open Door. Here she explains for us who Open Door are and the level of support they require to keep operating.

“Open Door is a charitable trust founded in 1984 and while based in Bray has a catchment area of North Wicklow and South County Dublin. The centre provides

facilities and activities for adults with varying physical disabilities as a result of Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Spina Bifida and road traffic

accidents, amongst others. The Centre is also a vital social outlet for its members where they can spend time in a comfortable, friendly and caring environment. In

addition to being an important part of the members’ lives, Open Door also provides carers with a break and some time for themselves.

Open Door is partially funded by the Health Service Executive but there is a shortfall which is raised through donations and fund raising with events such as an Art

Exhibition, table quiz, bag packs, a golf classic, a Mid-Summer Lunch, flag days. Funding has to be found to provide all of the activities such as Physiotherapy, Art,

Ceramics, Woodwork and Computers. The local community has been very generous in the past and Open Door relies on continuing support in order to improve and

develop the facilities and services provided within the centre. Our relationship with Sugarloaf Lions Club began in late 2007 when Joe Grennan invited me to give a

presentation at your meeting in Greystones Tennis Club. Sugarloaf Lions Club held a fundraising table quiz in 2008 in aid of Open Door and has continued to support the

Centre each year since then through holding an annual table quiz and entering a team in the Reggie Corrigan Open Door Golf Classic. Many of the Sugarloaf Lions Club

members have visited Open Door and have met with the members who benefit from this support.

As with all other organisations, traditional fundraising has stopped since March 2020 which means that we could not hold our Golf Classic, Mid-Summer Lunch, a number

of scheduled bag packs and flag days. The members, staff, volunteers and Board of Trustees very much appreciate the support of everyone in the Sugarloaf Lions Club.
